There's a tradition in Eastern & Central Europe, by entering somebody's house you take your shoes off [just being polite].

I think that is also tradition in Scandinavia and Baltic states. Mmmmm I was attending in the 80's few parties when girls were shoeless in the house. One or two were wearing nylons others socks. I can remember once a wine was poored out on the floor and one tall girl didn't saw it and was padding through it! You can imagine after 2-3 hours how her wet dirty nylon feet looked. Those were the days!
