From CNN - this story about the future of the <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/space/02/2 ... ">Japanese Space Program</a>.
If the Japanese really want to advance and excel in space exploration then they need to cast aside the current paradigm of what a national space program should look like. They should ignore what NASA is doing and look at what works:
1) Private organizations and equipment like Spaceship One.
2) Nuclear power.
3) Risk taking.
4) International partnerships and private investment.
Given the brains and talent the Japanese have shown in the past I've no doubt they could become the leaders in space exploration. But they need to start thinking outside the box so to speak.
Let's hope that daring and creativity wins this one.
