3-D Graphics Programs

With all the new stuff out there and with the programming in movies, the CGI stuff; is there anything out there the consumer can buy to start doing 3-d images? I love to lay out some of the scenarios I dream about into computer inages that look real...preferably something like CGI!!!
Is there anything out there like that??
