After a sugary-cute montage of a number of couples playing footsie at an upscale restaurant – all of them shot from under the table, as if to suggest that social etiquette may be keeping them from lunging at each other in a public space, but below, where nobody’s looking, they can do to each other what they really want to do – we pause to observe two pairs of feet planted firmly on the ground, stubbornly apart. They belong to Cal (Steve Carell) and Emily (Julianne Moore), who’ve been married twenty-five years and who clearly have crossed the footsie-playing stage.
